Seven notes and 26 Letters

Songwriting is magic. I’m never quite sure how it works. All it takes is seven notes and 26 letters arranged and rearranged to express absolutely anything. That is all we need to say whatever it is we have to say.

While I do appreciate a strong melody, lyrics are my true love. I use them to sort out what I think and what I feel. Sometimes I don’t know exactly why something is important to me until I dig into it. Other times I know just what I want to say but have no idea how to fit it all into a song. And every time I finish a song and look back, it seems both inevitable and impossible at the same time.

I’m recording an album right now of songs that each come from a different perspective, but the underlying message is the same—that things are not always good, but they can always be getting better. They are songs of agency. Of having the power to rise up, in big ways and in very small ways. Sometimes it’s as simple as getting out of bed when life feels impossible. Other times it’s about standing up to fight for justice. But it’s really the same thing—finding hope and a way to move forward with heart and purpose.

I am so excited to be sharing some songs at the RIA House benefit at Amazing Things Art Center on December 6th.  RIA House gives the gift of healing through connection. I am so grateful to be part of the experience and hope that my songs can help tell the story of hope and strength and the power to rise up.
